Do schools need an AI policy?

A shared policy gives students clear expectations and teachers a consistent basis for making decisions.

Yes. Schools need written guidance on AI use because students, teachers, and families need to understand what is permitted, who makes those decisions, and how concerns will be handled.

Expectations can reasonably vary by subject and assignment. A policy should explain the basis for those differences and establish requirements that apply across the school.

What happens without shared guidance

A student may encounter six different approaches to AI across six classes. One teacher prohibits it, another encourages it for brainstorming, and a third has said nothing. Elsewhere, a student has lost credit for using AI, while a teacher uses it to prepare feedback.

Some of these differences may be educationally sound. Using AI to generate ideas for a discussion is different from using it to complete an assessment of independent writing. Students need those distinctions explained before they begin the work.

Without shared guidance, teachers must resolve questions individually. Students are left to interpret expectations, and families may receive different answers depending on whom they ask.

Why schools should act before a dispute

An allegation of AI misuse can expose gaps in existing academic integrity procedures. What assistance was prohibited? Was that expectation communicated? What evidence supports the concern? Has the student had an opportunity to respond?

These questions are harder to resolve fairly once a grade or disciplinary consequence is at stake. A short policy, discussed with staff and communicated to families, gives the school a basis for addressing them in advance.

What a first policy needs to cover

An initial policy can be brief, provided it answers the questions people will face in practice.

  • What expectations apply across the school? Define unacceptable conduct, including submitting AI-generated work as independent work when the assignment requires it. Connect these expectations to existing academic integrity procedures.
  • What must users disclose? Establish a consistent way for students to acknowledge AI assistance and describe how they used it. Set appropriate disclosure expectations for staff as well.
  • Who decides what is permitted? Give teachers responsibility for assignment-level decisions within schoolwide requirements. Require them to communicate those decisions before work begins.
  • How will information be protected? Identify approved tools and explain what information may be entered into them. Make restrictions on identifiable student information and confidential records explicit.
  • How will concerns be handled? Describe how suspected misuse will be reviewed, how students can respond, and how consequences will be determined. An AI detector score should not be sufficient evidence on its own.

Name someone responsible for implementation and set a review date. Early experience will reveal where examples, clarification, or additional guidance are needed.

What a policy can accomplish

A policy cannot make every instance of AI use detectable. It can make expectations clear, support consistent decisions, and establish a fair process when concerns arise.

It also gives teachers a shared basis for discussing AI with students: why independent work matters in one assignment, why assistance is permitted in another, and what students remain responsible for in both.

Where to start

Bring a few actual assignments to a department or grade-level meeting. Ask teachers to identify acceptable AI assistance, work students must complete independently, and the disclosure they would expect.

Use the disagreements to identify what the school needs to settle and where teachers need discretion. Draft the initial guidance from those decisions, test whether students can understand it, and revise it after a defined period of use.
